Bruichladdich The Laddie Rye takes the distillery’s fruity and floral character in a spicy direction. The producer describes ginger and cracked black pepper aromas, followed by clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. Honey and vanilla balance the peppery rye character on the palate, with citrus on the finish. It is a useful option for drinkers curious about rye grown and distilled on Islay.
Start with a small neat pour to follow the movement from pepper to honey and citrus. At 50% ABV, a few drops of water offer an easy comparison with the original glass. If you prefer ice, let one cube melt gradually and taste along the way.
How it’s made: This seven-year single grain Scotch whisky uses locally grown Islay rye and malting barley. It matures entirely on Islay in first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill virgin American oak casks. The virgin oak is toasted rather than charred. Bottling strength is 50% ABV.
